Knock Knock

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression. Enter: The Door.

The face of the facade, the threshold of the domain, the bouncer of the manor, the portal to the palace, a door introduces the abode and sets the stage for the rooms to come.  Yet, it is often ignored, an afterthought, if that...

This reel pays homage to the grand gate keeper.  These doors are no bore.

To add personality and poise to your door(s) (interior or exterior) consider painting them a color and adding attractive hardware to the facade.  Contrary to popular belief, colors can be neutral – flipping through these photos you’ll see that even the homes with blue or green front doors don’t jump out at you.  I know it is a departure from the norm, but a unique door will set your house apart from your neighbors in a tasteful way – akin to a black bra under a white shirt, it is intriguing.  Make sure you use a high-gloss paint finish as it is the most durable quality and looks the best.

Onto hardware, the jewelry of the door. I could spend countless hours pinning hardware and lusting after how and where to use it.  I’ll save that for another post because infusing old furniture with rock crystal, colored glass, or beaded knobs and pulls is an addiction of mine.  The beauty of hardware is that it adds interest to the piece with texture and dimension.  Even if you don’t want a bold door, a decorative knocker, lock, hinge, peephole, backplate, nailheads, paneling, escutcheon, or knob will make your door more elegant.

Takeaway: Don't ignore the door.
