The Fifth Wall

There's just something about...ceilings.  Huh?  Yep, I just can't get enough of an unexpected, bombastic ceiling.  Maybe it's because my mom painted the ceiling in my childhood bedroom with a kite and clouds, and while I am now anti murals, I am still pro ceiling art.  In my former Gramercy apartment, I tried to offset the not-so-charming reality of a post-college apartment by painting my kitchen ceiling Benjamin Moore, Not So Mellow Yellow.  While the photos are not quite glam enough to include in this reel, I will say it added a bit more dimension and edge to my otherwise turn-off of a kitchen.  It doesn't have to be paint or paper transforming the space, architectural elements such as coffered ceilings, beams, plaster medallions, or intricate moldings are sophisticated ways to treat your ceiling as a focal point.  At my alma mater, Cullman & Kravis, they loved to gold leaf ceilings and our clients were equally enthusiastic with the results.  If you don't want to pay for that treatment (understandably) you can get a similar effect with a metallic spray.  As these photos illustrate, if you want to set your pad apart, the sky (or ceiling) is the limit.  Look up!

Takeaway: Mind the "5th" wall in the room.
